Chiropractic Management of Knee Pain: A Retrospective Case Series of 19 Patients
Background: Knee pain is a prevalent musculoskeletal complaint that significantly impacts mobility and quality of life. Conservative management strategies are a primary focus of patient care. This article examines the outcomes of patients receiving chiropractic care for knee pain at a single clinic. Methods: A retrospective case series was conducted on 19 patients who sought care for knee pain at TexStar Chiropractic in Dripping Springs, TX. Data were extracted from de-identified patient files. The primary outcome measure was the change in self-reported pain intensity, measured on a 10-point numeric rating scale, from initial presentation to final assessment. Results: The cohort of 19 patients reported a mean pain reduction of 87% (median 87%). Initial pain scores ranged from 7/10 to 9/10, while final pain scores ranged from 0/10 to 2/10. Treatment durations varied, with some courses of care lasting up to 12 weeks or 20 visits. Patient narratives frequently mentioned improvements in functional activities like navigating stairs and running. Conclusions: In this case series, patients with knee pain reported substantial improvements in pain following a course of chiropractic care. These findings suggest that a chiropractic approach may be a viable conservative treatment option for certain individuals with knee pain, warranting further investigation through more rigorous controlled studies.

Multimodal Chiropractic Management of Knee Pain: A Retrospective Case-Series of 19 Patients

All included patients had completed a course of care and had documented pre- and post-treatment pain scores. Interventions were patient-specific and could include knee decompression, spinal adjustments, cold laser therapy, and cryotherapy. The primary outcome measure was the percentage change in self-reported pain on a 0-10 numeric rating scale. Results: The cohort of 19 patients reported a mean pain reduction of 83% (median: 83%) following the completion of their treatment plans. Case vignettes illustrate these results, including a patient who avoided potential surgery and another whose knee pain resolved after addressing related hip mechanics. Conclusion: The findings suggest that a multimodal chiropractic approach may be effective in significantly reducing self-reported pain for patients with various knee conditions. These results support the role of conservative management and warrant further investigation through prospective controlled trials.

Data on initial and final self-reported pain scores, using an 11-point Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), were collected and analyzed. Percentage of pain reduction was calculated for each patient. Results: The cohort (n=19) demonstrated a mean pain reduction of 84% and a median pain reduction of 87%. Individual outcomes varied, but case vignettes illustrate significant improvements in patients with chronic pain, post-injury symptoms, and biomechanical issues. For instance, one patient reported a drop from 8/10 to 1/10 pain, while another with chronic activity-limiting pain achieved complete resolution (9/10 to 0/10). Conclusions: The findings suggest that a multi-modal chiropractic care plan may be an effective strategy for reducing pain in patients with various etiologies of knee pain. These promising results highlight the potential of this conservative approach, though further research with more rigorous designs is warranted.

Results: The analysis of 19 cases showed a mean pain reduction of 84% and a median pain reduction of 86%. Patient narratives indicated functional improvements, such as returning to running and improved stair climbing ability. Several patients reported avoiding previously considered surgical interventions. Conclusions: The findings from this retrospective case-series suggest that the chiropractic protocols utilized at this clinic may be effective for reducing pain and improving function in patients with various types of knee pain. The results are promising; however, due to the study's limitations, including the lack of a control group, further research through prospective, controlled trials is warranted to substantiate these observations.
