Outcomes of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care for Chronic Neck Pain: A Retrospective Case Series
Background: Chronic neck pain is a prevalent and debilitating condition. Chiropractic care, particularly upper cervical techniques, is a non-invasive approach aimed at restoring spinal alignment and function. This study evaluates outcomes for patients with chronic neck pain at a single chiropractic clinic. Methods: A retrospective case series was conducted on 21 patients with a primary complaint of chronic neck pain at One Life Chiropractic in Rochester, NY. Data were extracted from patient files, including initial and final self-reported pain scores on a 10-point numeric rating scale. The primary outcome was the percentage reduction in pain. Results: The cohort of 21 patients reported a mean pain reduction of 91% (median 89%) following a course of care. Individual cases demonstrated substantial improvements in pain and related symptoms over treatment periods typically lasting a few months. For example, a patient with post-accident neck pain reported a decrease in pain from 10/10 to 1/10. Conclusion: The findings from this case series suggest that the chiropractic techniques employed at this clinic may be effective in reducing chronic neck pain. The high percentage of pain reduction observed warrants further investigation through more rigorous study designs, such as prospective controlled trials.
